About

The Collaborative Systems Group (ColSys) at the Department of Computer Engineering of Bilkent University is headed by Dr.-Ing. Markus Schaal and aims at the analysis, modeling and design of the emergent shared Knowledge Space in the Information Society.

Our research focus lies on the following methods and applications:

  • Data Mining of Social Network Structure and User Feedback
  • Inductive Theory Building on User and Content Qualities
  • Probabilistic Reasoning about User and Content Qualities

The group currently consists of the following people:

  • Dr.-Ing. Markus Schaal is a Researcher and Instructor with a multi-disciplinary academic and industrial research experience in the fields of Distributed Intelligent and Interactive Systems, Bayesian Reasoning, Text Mining, Telematics, and Information Logistics. Markus Schaal received his PhD from the Berlin Technical University in 2004. Between 2004 and 2005, he was involved in the European Union PARMENIDES project at the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg, dealing with text mining and semiautomatic ontology enhancement.
  • Dr. David Davenport’s numerous research interests center on an attempt to understand cognition, and include philosophical investigations into the nature of mind and computation, as well as more practical applications of these ideas towards improved knowledge organisation and learning/education. He is particularly interested in learning communities, their evolution and the ethical issues that often arise within them. David received his PhD. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 1980 and worked for several companies and did private consultancy before joining the faculty of Bilkent University’s Computer Engineering department.
  • Dr. Murat Karamüftüoğlu's research interests are in information retrieval, knowledge management, social and philosophical aspects of information systems, and aesthetics of new media. Murat Karamuftuoglu received his PhD from City University (London) in 1998. He was one of the principal investigators of FP6 "Tools for innovative publishing in science" project between 2000-02, which involved development of advanced knowledge management tools for scientists.
  • Ali Çevik develops an Information Quality Module for the Moodle Wiki and he is a third year UG CS student at Bilkent University.
  • Ilker Murat Karakas applies Quality Principles and Semantic Technology to Emergency Management and he is a Ph.D. student at Bilkent University.
  • Melihcan Türk is a M.Sc. student at Bilkent University.
